The brown marmorated stink bug is a shield-shaped invader that seeks shelter indoors as temperatures drop. They slip into wall voids, attics, chimneys and around windows to overwinter, then become active and visible indoors on warm days.
Their defining trait is the foul odor they release when crushed or threatened — which is exactly why you shouldn’t squash them. Prevention through a fall exterior treatment is the best approach.
How to identify
- Brown, shield-shaped, about 1/2 to 5/8 inch
- Mottled coloring with banded antennae and legs
- Release a pungent odor when disturbed
