Springtails are tiny insects that "spring" into the air when disturbed, thanks to a tail-like appendage. They live in moist soil and organic matter, and during wet weather can appear in huge numbers around foundations, mulch beds, and damp indoor spots like sinks and drains.
They don’t bite or damage property, but their sheer numbers are alarming. Because they’re entirely moisture-driven, control hinges on drying out the areas that attract them.
How to identify
- Extremely small, about 1/16 inch, dark or pale
- Jump when disturbed
- Cluster in damp soil, mulch, and around moisture
