Earwigs are easily recognized by the pair of pincers at their rear. They’re nocturnal and moisture-loving, sheltering under mulch, stones, and leaf litter by day and feeding on plants and other insects at night. In summer they often wander indoors through ground-level gaps.
Despite the menacing pincers, they don’t harm people. Control focuses on the damp harborage around the foundation and sealing entry points.
How to identify
- Dark reddish-brown, about 1/2 to 3/4 inch
- Prominent rear pincers (cerci)
- Active at night; hide in damp areas by day
