Ground-nesting wasps include several species, most notably yellowjackets, that build colonies in old rodent burrows, soil cavities, and under landscaping. Unlike docile ground bees, these social wasps defend their nests aggressively and can sting repeatedly. Cicada Killers are the most common solitary wasp in our region. These are very large wasps occasionally found patrolling about knee high above sandy soils.

How to identify
- Yellow-and-black or brown wasps entering a ground hole
- Steady, busy traffic to a single soil opening
