Yellowjackets are among the most aggressive stinging insects, especially in late summer when colonies peak. They nest in the ground, in wall voids, and in dense shrubs, and will defend the nest vigorously — each one able to sting repeatedly. Considered the most dangerous pest in our region for good reason.
Their attraction to food and sugary drinks makes them a hazard around patios, garbage, and outdoor gatherings. Nest removal should always be left to qualified professionals.
How to identify
- About 1/2 inch, bright yellow-and-black banding
- Narrow waist; smooth (not fuzzy) body
- Fast, darting flight near the nest
Signs of an infestation
- Steady wasp traffic to a single point in the ground or wall
- Aggressive activity around food and trash
- Papery nests in voids or underground
