Polistes paper wasps build the familiar open, umbrella-shaped nests of hexagonal cells you see hanging under eaves, railings, and porch ceilings. They’re less aggressive than yellowjackets but will sting to defend the nest, especially when it’s near doors and high-traffic areas.
Removing old nests from the previous season — and treating favored nesting spots preventively — keeps them from establishing where people pass by.
How to identify
- Slender, about 3/4 to 1 inch, with two long dangling rear legs
- Black with yellow
- Open, single-layer umbrella nests
