Bumblebees are large, fuzzy, extremely beneficial pollinators that generally pose little threat. Problems arise only when a colony establishes in a sensitive spot — a wall void, shed, or ground cavity near a doorway or play area — where the bees will defend the nest if disturbed.
Because of their ecological value, the preferred approach is to leave them be where possible and only treat when a nest poses a genuine risk to people.
How to identify
- Large, robust, fuzzy bodies with yellow and black bands
- Slow, loud flight; gentle unless the nest is threatened
- Nest in cavities, wall voids, and sheltered ground spots
